Seaside Amusement Arcades Soundwalks Archive

Ongoing project, exploring the audio culture of contemporary seaside amusement arcades from around the UK. This archival project currently documents 35 seaside arcade soundwalks (and counting), taking an auto-ethnographic approach to sensory research, using binaural recorders. The project foregrounds sound-walking and deep listening, as ways to reveal new understandings of place. Sites explored include Blackpool, South Shields, Whitby, Scarborough, Margate, Hastings, Eastbourne, Newquay, St. Ives and Penzance.

Barber Shops of Levenshulme

The barber shop is an ongoing popular destination and is currently one of the fastest growing shop-types in the UK. Barber Shops of Levenshulme enquires into the plentiful barber shops in the area of Levenshulme, in South Manchester. Each barber shop is a unique and intriguing place with its own identity, that together form an under-explored culture of contemporary masculinity. As a crew of two, Kamran Ali and Martha Lineham developed this artist-ethnographic film combining skills and interests in artist filmmaking and place research. With a focus on the everyday, and a keen eye for eclectic interiors, the film focuses on celebrating local characters and under-represented communities.
